The A&B Branch originally operated under the Ministry of Education. Its activities accumulated photographs and slides depicting a range of features of school life from 1940s-1990s. Unique in its breadth, the archive illustrates a wide range of subjects, existing not only as documentation of the Branch’s activities and the construction of schools, but also as records of changes in styles of education, ideas of child-centred learning, planning, furniture, colour in schools, landscape, sociology, social history, post-war changes in secondary education, the secondary modern, vocational/technical education, construction styles and system builds, gender stereotypes, and many more.
