The Institute Archive comprises historical records of the Institute (formerly the London Day Training College) from its inception in 1902 to the present day. As a University Department of Education and Area Training Organisation for London and the South East it was a member of CHUDE and CID. The IOE continues to be a member of UCET.
Sir Fred Clarke was Director of the University of London, Institute of Education from 1936-1945. At this time the IOE was a University Department of Education. He was also a member of the McNair Committee which recommended the establishment of Area Training Organisations.
The General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) was the professional body for teaching in England established by the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998. It was responsible for awarding Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), regulated the teaching profession and advised the government and other agencies on a wide range of issues that affected the teaching profession, including standards, teaching and learning. It was abolished March 2012
The NUWT was a feminist organisation established to achieve equal pay for female teachers. The collection includes a wealth of information on the training and education of teachers, as well as papers concerning the work and professionalism of teachers after qualification.
TheTLRP ran from 2000-2012 and was the UK's largest ever educational research programme. Its origins can be traced to the mid-1990s when educational research was heavily criticised for being small scale, irrelevant, inaccessible and of low quality. It coordinated some 700 researchers in over 100 investments and projects focussed on five areas: outcomes, lifecourses, enrichment, expertise and improvement.
Weaver joined the Ministry of Education in 1946. In 1963, he was appointed Deputy-Secretary, Higher Education, a post he held until his retirement in 1973. His role included advising Ministers on the implementation of the Robbins Report on Higher Education, and the 1966 White Paper 'A Plan for Polytechnics and Other Colleges' was largely drafted by Weaver.
