White Family archive: Welcome

An introduction to the White Family archive

About this guide

This guide introduces the archive collection of the White Family (1883-1964) which comprises the papers of three generations of the White family.

Winnie, Louie, and Jessie, daughters of Robert and Louisa White, were all educated at Sheffield High School, and worked as teachers. The collection tracks their careers and the development of their interest in progressive education, which for Winnie (then Winnie Nicholls), led to the establishment of her own school, The Garden School in 1916-17.

The collection, with its diaries, and photographs, also provides a picture of family life in the late 19th- early 20th century
